Join us on Wednesday, October 9 for An Evening with Paddy Gower, one of New Zealand's best-known journalists.
Paddy Gower has spent decades telling Kiwis' stories. Now, he's telling his in the new book, THIS IS THE F#$%ING NEWS.
With family hailing from Northern Ireland, Paddy Gower has never been afraid to stand up for what he believes in. From his teenage and university years where he learnt to defend himself from cruel bullying about his looks, to the pressure-cooker years he spent in the Press Gallery holding politicians to account, to advocating for the families of the Christchurch terrorist attacks and for sufferers of cystic fibrosis, he has scrapped and fought for the truth and justice for others.
ďťż
This unrelenting drive has come at a cost: a serious alcohol addiction, anger issues at times, and bouts of anxiety and depression. Ironically, it was through his own work - a documentary about the outsized role that alcohol plays in many Kiwis' lives - that Paddy's wake-up moment came. It led him to quit the booze for good; a decision he has never regretted despite the knockbacks that kept coming, including the shock of the decision to close down the entire Newshub operation.

Join us for the third event in our Winter Breakfast Series with guest speaker Leo Molloy. He has gone from an early school-leaver to successful businessman and Auckland Mayoral Candidate.
He was born into an Irish family in Greymouth. His father passed away when Leo was young, leaving his mother to raise him and his six siblings alone. Through the adversity, she taught Leo the values of hard work and personal responsibility.
At 15, Leo left home to become an apprentice jockey. He recommenced high school as an adult student at 25, and studied for 7 years to complete his qualification as a veterinary surgeon at Massey University. Leo worked in the small animal sector, then equine veterinary medicine, for 20 years.
Leo entered the hospitality sector by chance in 1991 when he created a student bar in Palmerston North. The chain grew to eight other locations. Leo’s vision and unique approach to business turned the brand into a success story.
In August 1999, Leo opened Euro on Auckland’s waterfront. Euro was the first New Zealand restaurant to be named on the Condé Nast Traveller magazine’s list of top 50 restaurants in the world. This was followed by an Irish pub called Danny Doolans (named after Leo’s grandfather). Both establishments became an integral part of Auckland’s hospitality scene. He has also opened other establishments such as Cowboys Bar in the Viaduct and Queenstown, and the Headquarters Restaurant and Bar on Auckland’s waterfront.
Leo has been a champion for social impact and social change. Leo provided personal funding of $200,000 plus to build a Community Kitchen in South Auckland for Buttabean Motivation, and organised multiple fundraisers which raised in excess of $200,000 for the organisation.
