Our guest speaker will be Rhys Ellison, Principal at Rhys Ellison Law and former professional rugby player with Munster in Ireland. Rhys played in the European Cup with Munster and won the All Ireland League with Shannon RFC.

Rhys helped Waikato win the first ever National Championship final in 1992 and win the Ranfurly Shield off Auckland in 1993. He played against the British & Irish Lions twice and Australia once, defeating both the Lions and Australia.

Cancelled: Auckland Winter Breakfast Series: Leo Molloy

Join us for the third event in our Winter Breakfast Series with guest speaker Leo Molloy. He has gone from an early school-leaver to successful businessman and Auckland Mayoral Candidate.

He was born into an Irish family in Greymouth. His father passed away when Leo was young, leaving his mother to raise him and his six siblings alone. Through the adversity, she taught Leo the values of hard work and personal responsibility.

At 15, Leo left home to become an apprentice jockey. He recommenced high school as an adult student at 25, and studied for 7 years to complete his qualification as a veterinary surgeon at Massey University. Leo worked in the small animal sector, then equine veterinary medicine, for 20 years.

Leo entered the hospitality sector by chance in 1991 when he created a student bar in Palmerston North. The chain grew to eight other locations. Leo’s vision and unique approach to business turned the brand into a success story.

In August 1999, Leo opened Euro on Auckland’s waterfront. Euro was the first New Zealand restaurant to be named on the Condé Nast Traveller magazine’s list of top 50 restaurants in the world. This was followed by an Irish pub called Danny Doolans (named after Leo’s grandfather). Both establishments became an integral part of Auckland’s hospitality scene. He has also opened other establishments such as Cowboys Bar in the Viaduct and Queenstown, and the Headquarters Restaurant and Bar on Auckland’s waterfront.

Leo has been a champion for social impact and social change. Leo provided personal funding of $200,000 plus to build a Community Kitchen in South Auckland for Buttabean Motivation, and organised multiple fundraisers which raised in excess of $200,000 for the organisation.

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 related restrictions we are postponing this event. It will be rescheduled for another time in the near future.

IBNNZ invites you to join us at the Auckland Irish Society for a fun, educational evening of networking and sampling the Glendalough Distillery range of Irish whiskey and gins.

The Glendalough Distillery was set up by a group of friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a passion for reviving the heritage of craft distilling in Ireland. Together they built a craft distillery near their favourite spot in the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough. The result is a range of award-winning whiskeys and gin and they are available in New Zealand.

The NZ distributors, Tickety Boo, will showcase the range. Guests will be greeted with gin and whiskey cocktails, expertly led through a tasting and some of the Glendalough range will be available at the cash bar afterwards. There will be plenty of opportunity for networking. Finger food will be provided.
